The Angkor Wat International Half Marathon (AWHM) race began in 1996 and attracts several world-class professional athletes and thousands of recreational runners from all over the globe. Participation in the AWHM helps support the Hearts of Gold non profit organization that have projects in HIV/Aids prevention, promoting sports and activities for the disabled, and teachers curriculums on physical education in primary schools.
With nearly 6,000 participants in 2012 and over 6,000 expected for 2013 the AWHM is one of the most unique marathons. The AWHM offers the most stunning scenery of any marathon in the world. There are 3 levels of participation in the AWHM. A 21km half marathon, the 10km road race and a 3km fun run, with categories for both men and women competitors.

While participating in the challenge of running the race, marvel at the beauty of an empire created 900 years ago. The course takes place inside the 400 sq. km temple complex of Angkor a few kilometres north of Siem Reap, Cambodia. The UNESCO heritage park site is the most important and impressive archeological sites in South-East Asia and stands as one of the highest regarded historical temples on earth.
Most participants arrive a few days prior to the main event to acclimate to the weather in Cambodia, prepare for the marathon and to explore the city of Siem Reap. A visit to the temples is a once in a lifetime opportunity and you can spend several days discovering all the mysteries of the ancient Khmer empire. Cambodia has some of the most unique food in the world and Siem Reap has numerous options to tempt you with. After testing your endurance in the race treat yourself with a Khmer massage and no visit to Cambodia would be complete without seeing a traditional Apsara dance.
